The existing 'off the shelf' gas fire suite just wasn't going to fit the bill when this very astute retired lady relocated from a much-loved large country house. Her dream retirement home had to include a traditional fireplace and a stove which she had been used to for many years.
We opened up the fireplace to maximise the space in the chamber This also helped to make a small living room feel more spacious.
The enlarged chamber was lined with a brick-lined fireboard for a rustic feel. Hand made bricks from Yorkshire are cut into slithers and applied to the board. This makes the boards light enough to work with without needing to employ a specialist brick layer.
A new custom cut natural slate hearth was laid with generous proportions to the sides to provide space for log baskets.
To finish the look, a french oak kiln-dried beam was fitted across the top of the brickwork to create a feature mantle shelf.
To create a softer feel a grey colour was chosen for the Charnwood Island 1.
The project took only 3 days to complete and transformed the main reception room of the house.
